Top Things to See, Do and Eat in Gearhart!

Nestled between Seaside and Astoria, lies the quaint and peaceful beach town of Gearhart, Oregon. Visitors love the pristine natural beauty, and friendly small-town charm. A stay here offers you access to the oldest golf course in Oregon and miles of beach – perfect for beach combing, searching for sand dollars, and digging for razor clams.

Ready to explore this tucked away coastal gem? Book a stay in Gearhart with Meredith Lodging.

We have put together a list of some of the top things to see, do and eat:

Hit Gearhart Golf Links.

Head to Gearhart Golf Links, the oldest golf course in Oregon. This course first opened in 1892 with just three holes, and now boasts a stunning 18-hole public course.

Beach Combing.

Gearhart’s unspoiled beach is the perfect place to search for sand dollars, shells, and other ocean treasures. We recommend heading to the beach during low tide and early in the morning for the best combing conditions.

Explore Peter Iredale Shipwreck.

Head to Fort Stevens where you can explore the rusted remains of this steel cargo ship that ran aground on Clatsop beach in 1906. Low tide is the best time to visit if you want to wander amongst the wreckage. You can also explore more history at Battery Russell – an important battery defending the Oregon coast during WWII. We recommend picking up a brochure in the parking lot. Fun note – you can drive on the beach at Fort Stevens!

Spot Whales and Elk.

Keep your eyes open for whale spouts as majestic gray whales pass the shores as they migrate north or south depending on the time of year. You may also see some of the local herd of 200 coastal elk that call the dunes and beaches of Gearhart home.

Enjoy a Beloved Gearhart Pastime – Digging for Razor Clams.

Make your way to the beach, and with a little luck and determination, you may be rewarded with some tasty clams to cook up back at your cozy Meredith Lodging vacation rental. Check out tips and guidelines here.

Get Some Brews and Bites at Gearhart’s McMenamins Sand Trap Bar & Grill.

Stop by the legendary McMenamins Sand Trap Bar & Grill for breakfast, lunch, happy hour, or dinner. This Northwest-style pub is known for their craft beer and hearty pub fare made from local and regional farmers. They also have seasonal specials and a kid’s menu. Outside dining is available on the patio, and pups are welcome, too!
