Hug Point State Recreation Site

Cannon Beach
March 12, 2023

Hug Point State Recreation Site, located on the northern Oregon Coast, is a beautiful state park with plenty of amenities and natural wonders to explore. Here’s a closer look at what you can expect to find at this popular recreation site.

Discovering Hug Point State Park

Hug Point State Park is a popular park administered by the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department. This 43-acre park is situated along U.S. Route 101, about 5 miles south of Cannon Beach. The park is open to the public, and best of all, it’s fee-free! Visitors can enjoy picnicking, fishing, and a Pacific Ocean beach, as well as other recreational activities.

Exploring Hug Point

The park is named after Hug Point, a beautiful cape that lies within its borders. The cape’s name comes from late 19th-century stagecoaches that had to “hug” the point even at low tide to get around it. The primitive roadbed was chipped into the head by unknown persons around the turn of the 20th century to facilitate access to Arch Cape. The roadbed is still there and is a popular spot for visitors to explore.

Natural Wonders at Hug Point

In addition to the roadbed, Hug Point State Park has a lot of natural wonders to explore. Visitors can take a sloping walkway to the beach, where they’ll find erosion-formed caves in sandstone cliffs along the headland’s south side. The area is also home to a seasonal waterfall, which is a beautiful sight to see.

The Oregon Coast Trail

The Oregon Coast Trail passes through Hug Point State Park along the beach, providing visitors with even more opportunities to explore the area.

Visiting Hug Point State Recreation Site

If you’re planning a visit to Hug Point State Recreation Site, keep in mind that the park has a large parking area and public restrooms available for your convenience. Just be sure to pack out any trash you generate during your visit to help keep this beautiful park clean and pristine.
