Caffeinated Coast: A Guide to Coffee Shops in Cannon Beach Sleepy Monk Coffee Roasters If you know you know! Fans from all over the globe make a beeline for their first cup of Sleepy Monk roast when in town; you’ll see a line at this coffee shop most any day. And for good reason! The homey building oozes coastal charm with unmatched indoor and outdoor seating. House-made pastries (ahem, Chocolate Orange Scone, ahhh) are worth every calorie. Fresh roasted beans are shipped everywhere so you can enjoy the taste of Cannon Beach from home. Bald Eagle Coffee House When you’re looking for that community vibe and a seat in the sunshine, stop by Midtown’s Bald Eagle Coffee House. Owners Tom and Laurie keep the soup hot, fresh and homemade alongside pastries and sweets; they’ve been Cannon Beach’s solid Starbucks supply for decades and know what you like. Visit the attached Cannon Beach Community Gallery to see work from local artists just getting into the scene and seasoned pros. Salmon River Coffee & Bagel House Everything locally made is popular in Cannon Beach, and the newest coffee shop in Cannon Beach feels right at home. Locally roasted espresso drinks and hand pies are served in a cozy café, a long- favored location for writing. Wrought iron seating in the courtyard is a great spot for people watching. Inside, find a growing selection of local, artisan made delicacies including Native American smoked salmon, fresh bread and cookies. Seasons Café255 N Hemlock St, Cannon Beach, OR 97110 When the weather drives you inside, or you want a little something more with your coffee than a bun, head to the center of town to Season’s Café, where the creative menu has an enticing selection of hot or cold sandwiches. The table layout in Season’s has several quiet corners for conversation or reading and a bright main room for your bigger group. Another of Cannon Beach’s homey kitchens; everything here is fresh and just like your gourmet dad made you a snack. Cannon Beach Chocolate Café232 N Spruce St, Cannon Beach, OR 97110 Before leaving downtown, Illy coffee lovers will want to make a stop at the Cannon Beach Chocolate Café where they pull creamy shots of Italy’s favorite espresso surrounded by everything chocolate. You don’t have to have chocolate, but you would be missing out on a unique taste experience; mochas and drinking chocolate start with 70% Colombian dark chocolate melted into the Chocolate Café’s signature sauce. The milk chocolate drinking chocolate is as rich and creamy and decadent as you’d hope and a Mayan spiced drinking chocolate brings the spicy flavors of Mexican chocolate to your cup. Hang out on the porch here to watch the goings-on in City Park or take shelter inside on a rainy afternoon. Insomnia Coffee Company139 W 2nd St, Cannon Beach, OR 97110 Park yourself in a window wrapped corner in this Cannon Beach coffee shop and watch the world go by! Just a half block from the beach, this warming and welcoming spot is a wonderful hangout with a bustling vibe. Matcha drinks shine here, as do the Aztec Mocha and the Caramel Latte; shake up your routine and find out why these drinks are at the top of Insomnia’s recommendations. Beans are roasted by sister company Dapper & Wise, making this a local-local company! Kid friendly and often busy, it’s worth the wait for a bacon cheddar scone (psst, you can order ahead on their mobile app to skip ahead in line). Sea Level Bakery + Coffee3116 S Hemlock St, Cannon Beach, OR 97110 Heart Roasters’ single-origin coffees are the smooth accompaniment to classic French baking in a hip Tolovana hang out. Head to the quieter end of the beach to find this bakery + coffee shop at the south end of Cannon Beach and take a cup down to the sands with you or stop for a warm up and a treat after your walk. Scones and sticky buns with lovingly laminated layers fill the case next to cookies, banana bread, sourdough loaves and always some gluten-free treats. The daily menu of soups and sandwiches changes with the seasons and the patio seating on the side is ideal for picnicking outdoors.

Things to Do in Cannon Beach, Oregon

Did you know Cannon Beach was just named the sixth best beach in the United Stated by Tripadvisor … and with good reason!  This charming village by the sea offers endless outdoor pursuits, breathtaking views, great shopping and restaurants, and fun annual events.  Check out a few of our favorite things to do in Cannon Beach, Cannon Beach History Cannon Beach, Oregon is a coastal city that is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and is home to Haystack Rock, a popular tourist attraction. Prior to European contact, the Tillamook people inhabited the region. In 1805, William Clark, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, explored the area and traded with the Tillamook for whale blubber. The area was initially called Elk Creek but was renamed Cannon Beach in 1922 after a cannon from the US Navy schooner Shark washed ashore. The tsunami generated by the Good Friday earthquake in 1964 washed away the highway bridge, leading to the city’s isolation from the highway. In response, the city began hosting a sand castle contest annually in June, which still continues today. Explore the Stunning Beaches & Parks of Cannon Beach The Beach & Haystack Rock Nearly four miles of sandy beach stretch out from downtown Cannon Beach with iconic Haystack Rock rising 235 feet from the edge of the shoreline. Observe tidepools teeming with sea life, and keep your eye out for the colony of tufted puffins that call the rock home during spring and summer.  Ecola State Park This visually stunning park offers miles of walking paths, hiking trails, picnic areas, access to Indian Beach and Crescent Beach, views of the historic Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, and look out points for birdwatching and whale watching. You may even see a herd of elk grazing in the meadows!  Hug Point State Recreation Site Three miles south of Cannon Beach, a visit to Hug Point offers easy beach access and a glimpse into local history. Before the highway was built, the only way to travel along this stretch of the coast was by beach. Imagine traveling by stagecoach on the beach? At low tides, enjoy exploring sea caves, a small waterfall, and remnants of the old cliff-side roadway. Tide and sand conditions can change suddenly, so please explore safely.   Catch of the Day: Oceanside Seafood Dining Mo’s Seafood and Chowder No trip to the Oregon Coast is complete without trying our award-winning clam chowder. Fuel up after a long day on the beach with a piping hot bowl from Mo’s Seafood and Chowder paired with an order of their freshly baked bread or garlic parmesan cheese bread.   Ecola Seafood Restaurant and Market Want to pick up some fresh seafood to grill back at your cozy vacation rental? Head to Ecola Seafood Restaurant and Market. Can’t wait till dinner? Everything on their menu is outstanding. Our go-to order is their crab melt sandwich – two slices of garlic bread served open faced, topped with Dungeness crab, melted cheddar cheese, and their secret sauce!    Wayfarer Dine with a view at Wayfarer. This beachfront favorite has something for everyone – craft cocktails, delicious food (breakfast, lunch and dinner), and sublime views. We love their Dungeness crab mac & cheese, and fish and chops – fresh Alaskan halibut perfectly fried in a Public Coast Brewing Co. ‘67 Blonde Ale beer batter. Make sure and save room for dessert or enjoy a night cap in their Whiskey Lounge.  Shop and Stroll Hemlock Street in Downtown Cannon Beach Locals and visitors alike love to take an afternoon stroll down charming Hemlock Street. You can find everything from cozy cafes to kitschy souvenirs to thoughtfully curated pieces, as well as delicious goodies at Bruce’s Candy Kitchen.  Sip Some Suds: Bars and Breweries in Cannon Beach After an adventure filled day, relax with some tasty pub fare paired with a crisp, refreshing craft beer. Enjoy the local brewing scene at Pelican Brewing Company, Public Coast Brewing, and Bill’s Tavern & Brewhouse.   Annual Events in Cannon Beach There is always something happening in Cannon Beach. We recommend checking out the calendar for current events, dates, and locations, but here are a few of our favorites:   Ready to Explore Cannon Beach?  Book a stay with us! Things to Do in Cannon Beach in the Winter

Things to Do in Cannon Beach in the Winter

This winter, come to Cannon Beach and experience all the amazing wonder it has to offer! Watch storms roll in from the comfort of your beach house, spot some whales while on a coastal hike, or look for elk grazing in the distance. Don’t forget to explore forest hikes and mushroom hunting on the other side of town! You’re sure to find hidden treasures everywhere you go. Here is a list of things to do in Cannon Beach in the winter, some of which you can do all year round, but are better in the winter months. #1 – Storm Watching Experiencing the stormy Pacific Ocean is an awe-inspiring event that will make you appreciate nature’s power. If you have a vacation home overlooking the coast, it’s even better because you can watch the storm from the comfort of your own home. But if you want to get out in the weather, Ecola State Park provides panoramic views like no other. Be sure to pack a raincoat! You can test the winds along the beach or dance in the rain–we’ll have flashlights for you in all our homes for any periodic power outages. Embrace adventure during your stay! #2 – Whale Watching What if the weather improves during your planned storm trip? There’s no need to worry; simply change it up for some whale viewing! On their way to and from Mexico, grey whales migrate past our coast. You’re likely to spot them, or orcas, between December and March. For the best spout viewing, go to the higher viewpoint points. However, no matter where you are (granted you can see the Pacific Ocean), you might see a whale or two – so keep your eyes open! #3 – Beachcombing Check out these amazing spots for agate hunting: Arcadia Beach, Tolovana Beach, Hug Point, Cove Beach, and Short Sand beach. You’re bound to find some beautiful pieces of beach glass too. The best time to look is from December to March after storms; the erosion washes the stones towards the ocean where they get polished over time. If you’re seeking for sand dollars, the best sources are along the northern end of the beach, according to locals. Arcadia Beach, which is located just south of town, is another excellent area to find a lot of sand dollars. If you’re prepared, collecting your shells and cleaning them is a snap. Rinse them in a little amount of water to help remove the funk. To fully eliminate the stench, soak them in a 1:10 bleach solution after the sand has mostly been removed. #4 – Go Elk Scouting in Ecola State Park Keep your eyes peeled for Roosevelt elk while in Ecola State Park. These majestic creatures are often seen grazing near the beach in the winter months. If you’re lucky, you might even spot a bull with a large rack of antlers! If you want to increase your chances of seeing an elk, go on a hike during dawn or dusk. These are the times when they’re most active. Be sure to keep your distance, though, as elk can be aggressive if they feel threatened. #5 – Explore the Oregon Coast! Cannon Beach is just one of many beautiful towns on the Oregon Coast. During your stay, be sure to explore some of the other nearby towns, such as Seaside, Manzanita, and Rockaway Beach. Each town has its own unique charm that you’re sure to love! #6 – Enjoy the Holidays! The festive season begins in November and December with Haystack Holidays, Mimosa Madness, the downtown Lamp Lighting Ceremony, photos with Santa, Holiday Foods Around the World, and more. There’s no wrong way to spend your winter vacation in Cannon Beach. Whether you’re looking for adventure or simply want to relax, you’ll find it here. So what are you waiting for? Cannon Beach Hiking Trails – 6 of the Best Hikes on the Coast You’ll LOVE!

Cannon Beach is a haven for relaxation and adventure. For outdoor enthusiasts who want to get out and about, Cannon Beach has numerous hiking routes within minutes of town that may be explored. Take advantage of the Oregon Coast’s unrivaled beauty by exploring these beautiful hikes in and around Cannon Beach. #1 – Cape Falcon Trail  Cape Falon is a 4.8-mile out and back trail in Oswald West State Park that provides breathtaking views of the Oregon Coast and is considered moderate difficulty. Weave your way through magnificent Sitka spruce trees and absorb the serenity of the forest. You’ll be greeted with beautiful vistas of Neahkahnie Mountain and Manzanita at the end of the route. #2 – Neahkahnie Mountain Trail  The Neahkahnie Mountain Trail is a popular destination on the Oregon Coast. For hikers, Neahkahnie Mountain is one of the highest points on the West Coast and provides a moderate difficulty (although still family-friendly) hike. As you begin your journey, wildflowers will welcome you, and as you reach the finish, stunning panoramic views of the Pacific will be sure to leave you speechless. This 2.8-mile out and back trek is heavily used but provides just enough peace and quiet to enjoy. #3 – Devil’s Cauldron Trail  For a quick excursion with spectacular views, the Devil’s Cauldron Trail is a wonderful choice in a trail. Devil’s Cauldron may be considered more of a stroll than a hike since it is only 0.5 miles long. The viewpoint overlooks a tiny cove where the surf crashes against the rock walls, and it can get overgrown and muddy at times. However, the views are well worth the short trek. #4 – Haystack Rock  Haystack Rock is a 4.3-mile out-and-back hike that takes you to one of the most iconic landmarks on the Oregon Coast. Although this route may be considered easy, it is still packed with adventure. From tide pools filled with marine life to incredible views, Haystack Rock should not be missed. #5 – Short Sands Beach Trail at Oswald West State Park The Short Sands Beach Trail is a quick and easy 1.6-mile out and back hike that provides stunning views of the ocean, as well as the unique geologic formations that make up Short Sands Beach. This trail is perfect for those who want to enjoy the beauty of nature without a lot of effort. Whether you’re looking for a challenging hike or a leisurely stroll, Cannon Beach has something for everyone. Get out and explore all that this beautiful area has to offer! #6 – Indian Beach Trail via Ecola State Park This 3.8-mile out and back hike is considered moderate difficulty, but provides stunning views of the ocean as well as the unique geologic formations that make-up Indian Beach. This trail is perfect for those who want to enjoy the beauty of nature without a lot of effort. Are these Trails Dog-Friendly? All of the trails listed above are pet-friendly, but leashes must be used when/if you enter state park boundaries. Dogs that aren’t on a leash can go wherever they want within the park; however, they must have strong recall skills if not kept on a leash. Pack & Dress Appropriately Pack or Wear Boots Remember to bring appropriate clothing and shoes for your trip along the Oregon Coast! While tennis shoes may be fine on some trails, hiking boots are always preferable. Beach Gear When on the beach trails above, make sure to remember a couple things: sunscreen & water! The sun can be quite strong on the Oregon Coast, so make sure to put sunscreen on all exposed skin. Drink plenty of water, even if you don’t feel thirsty, to avoid dehydration and heat exhaustion. In the winter, bring extra clothes in case you get wet. Bring a Camera You’ll want to capture the incredible views from these hikes, so make sure to bring your camera or phone! Follow Leave No Trace Principles When enjoying the outdoors, it is important to follow Leave No Trace principles in order to help protect and preserve our natural areas. These principles include things such as packing out what you pack in and respecting wildlife. Exploring Indian Beach – A Beach You’ll Love

Nestled at the base of Tillamook Head’s southern slope in stunning Ecola State Park, sits Indian Beach. This secluded cove is a great place to surf, bird watch, explore tide pools, and hit the trails.   Hit the Trails of Ecola State Park Clatsop Loop Trail The Clatsop Loop Trail starts up by the parking lot. This fairly easy to moderate, 2.8-mile loop winds you through a lush old-growth Sitka spruce forest, and offers some great viewpoints along the outer edge. Leashed pups are allowed. Crescent Beach Trail The Crescent Beach Trail also offers access to a nearby and less-trafficked beach.  Surf’s Up  Surfing the Oregon Coast is a year-round sport, but summer is the best time to learn how to surf at Indian Beach, because the northwest winds are blowing, and the waves are typically smaller. Already a pro? The fall offers prime conditions with warmer waters, less wind, and consistent surf. Winters are great too, if you can brave the heavy rainfall and frigid Pacific Ocean temperatures. Check out daily surf forecast and conditions here.    The friendly and knowledgeable crew at Cleanline Surf Shop in Cannon Beach can get you geared up for a fun-filled day on the water at Indian Beach. They also have local instructors who provide lessons for all ages and skill levels. Don’t surf, but still want to enjoy the water? You can also rent a bodyboard, kayak, paddle board, or skimboard.  Tide Pools  Discover rarely visited tidepools in the boulder-strewn areas at the southern end of the beach. Tide pools can be viewed any time of day, but are best visited during low tide where you can see sea stars, hermit crabs, anemones, barnacles, and more!  Please note: There is a $ 5 day-use fee.   Book a Stay with Us in Cannon Beach Ready to explore stunning Ecola Park and Indian Beach? Cannon Beach Tidepools: Discover The Marine Life Along The Beach

A wide array of creatures reside where Cannon Beach’s rocky shorelines touch the Pacific Ocean. As the tide ebbs, a novel and vibrant environment is exposed in intertidal and rocky areas. Look closely and you’ll find anemones that resemble flowers blooming at the bottom of pools, or colorful sea slugs called nudibranchs crawling on rocks. Among these captivating and interesting sights are also crabs, fish, snails, limpets, sponges, and a variety of different types of sea stars. Cannon Beach is rich with tide pools, making it a great destination for seeing the amazing creatures that call these unique habitats home. It’s a MUST for any Cannon Beach vacation! What is a Tidepool? How Do You Find Tide Pools? A tidepool is a shallow pool of seawater that forms on the rocky shoreline as the tide goes out. As the tide ebbs, pools of varying sizes and depths are left behind. Some tidepools are only a few inches deep while others can be several feet deep. To find tidepools, look for areas where there are rocks jutting out into the water. These areas are more likely to have tidepools as the waves will not be able to wash away all of the water. When exploring tidepools, it is important to be respectful of the creatures that live there. Remember to never remove anything from the tidepool as it could damage the delicate ecosystem. Also, be careful not to step on any of the creatures, or damage the plants. Looking at a pool or gently sweeping away seaweed might reveal tiny ocean wildlife that would otherwise be missed. When looking for locations to find tidepools, be cautious of your surroundings at all times and never turn your back on the ocean. During the day, the sun warms these tidepools and the water within them evaporates. This creates a unique environment for the creatures that live there as they must be able to withstand fluctuations in temperature and salinity. At night, when the tide comes back in, these creatures are once again submerged in cold ocean water. When Is the Best Time To Explore? The best time to explore the tidepools is during a low tide, when the water recedes and exposes a larger area of rocks and pools. Check the tide chart before you go so you know when to expect the low tide. It’s also a good idea to wear shoes with good traction, so you don’t slip on the wet rocks. Where Can I Find Tidepools Near Cannon Beach? Near Haystack Rock Haystack Rock is located just north of Cannon Beach and is a popular destination for tourists and locals alike. The tidepools found there are home to a wide variety of creatures, including anemones, crabs, sea stars, and urchins. Ecola Point / Ecola State Park Ecola State Park is another good option for exploring tidepools. It’s not as popular as Haystack Rock, but it’s just as interesting. This state park is located just north of Cannon Beach and features a number of different trails with stunning views of the coastline. The tidepools here are home to a variety of creatures, including crabs, anemones, and urchins.  Indian Beach Discover rarely visited tidepools at the southern end of this less-populated boulder-strewn area by taking a side road down to Indian Beach.
