The trailhead is in Ecola State Park, and it offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean.    Cape Perpetua Overlook Trail  Situated near Yachats, Cape Perpetua offers several family-friendly trails. The Overlook Trail is an easy loop that takes you to a stunning viewpoint with panoramic views of the coastline.    Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area  This area, near Newport, has a short trail that leads to the Devil’s Punchbowl, a unique natural formation. It’s a great spot for tidepooling and enjoying the coastal scenery.    Cape Lookout Trail  Located in Cape Lookout State Park, this trail offers a scenic hike through the forest to the tip of Cape Lookout, providing spectacular views of the ocean. It’s a bit longer but can be adapted for family hikes.    Fort Stevens State Park  Fort Stevens, near Astoria, offers a variety of trails suitable for families. The Coffenbury Lake Trail is an easy loop around a lake, and the South Jetty Trail provides coastal views and opportunities for wildlife watching.    Short Sand Beach Trail   This short and easy trail in Oswald West State Park leads to Short Sand Beach, a beautiful cove surrounded by lush forest. Fall is the perfect season for cozy and comforting recipes that incorporate the warm and earthy flavors of the season.   Book a getaway to Seaside where there is always fun to be had! After sharing a meal together, head down to the promenade where families have been taking a stroll since 1920!  Here are some delicious fall recipes to enjoy:  Shredded Brussels Sprout Bacon Salad and Warm Cider Vinaigrette  This shredded brussels sprout bacon salad is quick, festive, and so delicious. Shredded brussels sprouts, nutty Manchego cheese, toasted hazelnuts, and juicy pomegranates, all tossed with a warm cider vinaigrette that’s sweet and tangy.   Prep Time: 20 minutes   Cook Time: 10 minutes   Total Time: 30 minutes   Calories: 715kcal  Ingredients  6 cups shredded brussels sprouts (about one 12-ounce bag)  1 1/2 cups grated Manchego or parmesan cheese  1/2 cup toasted hazelnuts or pecans, roughly chopped  1 1/2 cups pomegranate arils  6 thick cut slices bacon, chopped  1/3 cup extra virgin olive oil  1 medium shallot, thinly sliced  2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar  1 tablespoon apple butter or fig preserves  1 tablespoon fresh thyme leaves  1 teaspoon fresh orange zest  kosher salt and black pepper  pinch of crushed red pepper flakes    Directions  In a large salad bowl, combine the shredded brussels sprouts, cheese, hazelnuts, and pomegranate arils. Cook the bacon in a large skillet over medium heat until crisp. Drain onto a paper towel. Wipe the skillet clean. To make the vinaigrette. Heat the olive oil in the same skillet used to cook the bacon over high heat. When the oil shimmers, add the shallots, cook until fragrant, 2-3 minutes. Remove from the heat, let cool slightly. Add the apple cider vinegar, apple butter, thyme, and orange zest. Season with salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper flakes.  Pour the vinaigrette over the salad, tossing to combine. Top the salad with bacon. Serve warm or at room temperature. Instant Pot Pesto Zuppa Toscana This super simple Instant Pot Pesto Zuppa Toscana is the perfect fall weather soup.  Prep Time 15 minutes   Cook Time 15 minutes   Total Time 30 minutes   Servings: 6  Calories: 487kcal   Ingredients  4 slices thick cut bacon, chopped  3/4 pound ground spicy Italian chicken sausage  1 yellow onion, chopped  4 cloves garlic, minced or grated  2 ribs celery, chopped  4 small yukon gold or russet potatoes peeled and chopped  6 cups low sodium chicken broth  1/3 cup basil pesto, homemade or store-bought  juice of 1 lemon  1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes  kosher salt and black pepper  1 bunch Tuscan or curly kale, roughly chopped  3/4 cup heavy cream or whole milk  1/2 cup grated parmesan or asiago cheese  fresh thyme, for serving (optional)    Directions     Instant Pot  Set Instant Pot to sauté. Add the bacon and cook until crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon. If there’s excess bacon grease, drain off all but 1 tablespoon. Add the chicken sausage and onions, and brown all over, about 5 to 8 minutes. Add the garlic, celery, and potatoes, and cook 2 minutes. Turn the Instant Pot off. To the instant pot, add the broth, pesto, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on high pressure for 8 minutes.  Once done cooking, use the natural or quick release function. Set the Instant Pot to sauté. Stir in the kale, cream, and parmesan. Cook until the kale is wilted, about 10 minutes. Turn the Instant Pot off. Stir in the reserved bacon.  Serve the soup topped with additional parmesan and fresh thyme, if desired.   Stove-Top   Cook the bacon in a large soup pot set over medium heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon. If there’s excess bacon grease, drain off all but 1 tablespoon. Add the chicken sausage and onions, and brown all over, about 5 to 8 minutes. Add the garlic, celery, and potatoes, and cook 2 minutes. Add the broth, pesto, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Simmer over medium heat for 15-20 minutes, until the potatoes are tender. Stir in the kale, cream, and parmesan. Cook until the kale is wilted, about 10 minutes. Remove from the heat. Stir in the reserved bacon. Serve the soup topped with additional parmesan and fresh thyme, if desired.    Slow Cooker  Cook the bacon in a large soup pot set over medium heat until crisp, about 5 minutes. Remove the bacon. If there’s excess bacon grease, drain off all but 1 tablespoon. Add the chicken sausage and onions, and brown all over, about 5 to 8 minutes. Transfer the chicken sausage to the bowl of your crockpot. To the crockpot, add the the garlic, celery, potatoes, broth, pesto, lemon juice, red pepper flakes, and season with salt and pepper. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or on high for 4-5.  During the last 30 minutes of cooking, stir in the kale, cream, and parmesan. Turn the heat to high and cook until the kale is wilted. Stir in the reserved bacon. Serve the soup topped with additional parmesan and fresh thyme, if desired.   Smoky Harvest Apple Cider Margarita Pitcher This autumn harvest margarita is a cozy take on the classic. Cheers!  Prep Time: 10 minutes   Total Time: 10 minutes   Servings: 8  Calories: 212kcal   Ingredients  cinnamon sugar and flaky sea salt, for the rim  12 ounces mezcal or silver tequila (about 1 1/2 cups)  3-4 ounces orange liquor (about 1/4 cup)  2 cups apple cider  1 cup fresh lime juice  1/4 cup maple syrup use more or less depending on how sweet you want the drink  apple slices and cinnamon, sticks for serving    Directions  In a large pitcher, combine mezcal or tequila, orange liquor, apple cider, lime juice, and maple. Chill until ready to serve. When ready to serve, if desired, rim glasses in salted cinnamon sugar, fill with ice. Pour the margarita into glasses. Garnish with apple slices, rosemary, and cinnamon sticks. If desired light the cinnamon on fire for a smoky effect.    Butternut Squash Pasta Carbonara with Rosemary Bacon  Simple and cozy – for nights when you’re craving Italian, but also want cozy fall flavors.  Prep Time: 10 minutes   Cook Time: 20 minutes   Total Time: 30 minutes   Servings: 6  Calories: 493kcal    Ingredients  1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil  2 cups cubed butternut squash (about

If you are planning to be in Oregon the 2nd weekend in October, you may get to experience a sight to behold – an annular solar eclipse. Sky-watchers in parts of Oregon will be among the first in the U.S to see the big show before it continues towards Texas and Central America. Those inside the path of the eclipse will see the sun appear as a bright ring-shaped halo around the edges of the moon for a full 4 minutes before it moves southeast. What Causes the Dramatic Ring of Fire? An annular solar eclipse occurs only when the moon is at its furthest point from the Earth and passes between our planet and the sun. Because the moon is too far away to block out the sun completely, it creates a brilliant “ring of fire” around it. Where and When to Watch The 2023 annular solar eclipse will be visible along a narrow path crossing from Oregon to Texas. The eclipse will make landfall along parts of the Central and Southern Oregon Coast (including Coos Bay and North Bend shortly after 8 a.m., before reaching “annularity” at 9:18 a.m. on October 14, 2023. This interactive map from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) will help pinpoint locations to view the eclipse. How to View the Eclipse Safely The only safe way to view a solar eclipse is with special eclipse glasses or a solar filter. Never look directly at the sun, even during a partial eclipse, without protection. The sun’s rays can cause serious eye damage, including blindness. Eclipse glasses are specially designed to filter out the sun’s harmful rays. They are available at most astronomy stores and some retail stores. You can also purchase them online. Solar binoculars are another option for viewing a solar eclipse. They are equipped with special filters that protect your eyes. However, solar binoculars are more expensive than eclipse glasses. If you are planning to view the solar eclipse, be sure to get your eclipse glasses or solar binoculars well in advance. Supplies tend to sell out quickly. Local tip: Get your eclipse glasses at the Coos Bay Visitor Center or stop by a Travel Oregon Welcome Center between Oct. 1 and Oct. 14 to pick up a free pair (while supplies last). We can’t list all the fun to be had, but we guarantee you will agree Leavenworth is sehr gemütlich!  Here are some of our favorite things to do:  Festivals Leavenworth is always celebrating something throughout the year, so no matter when you are visiting, there will be a feeling of merriment in the air. The signature festivals are Christmastown, Winter Karneval, Love from Leavenworth, Maifest, and Oktoberfest.  Take a Stroll Along the Waterfront Park Trail Start the morning with an invigorating walk or bike ride around the Wenatchee River. The river is very close to downtown and is easily accessed from Commercial Street. There are several small beach inlets throughout the park, perfect for taking a dip on hot summer days.    Visit Leavenworth Reindeer Farm Conveniently located just 1 mile outside of town, this family-owned reindeer farm offers interactive and educational tours that the whole family will enjoy. If you are visiting Leavenworth in December, a Christmas visit to the farm is truly magical. Visitors can meet and greet the beloved characters from Disney’s Frozen movie – Elsa, Anna, Olaf, and Sven, gather around a campfire, hand-feed the reindeer, and even meet Santa!   Make sure to stop by the gift shop where you can pick up an ornament or a souvenir to remember this unique and special experience. Advanced reservations are required.   Hit the Icicle Gorge Trail Icicle Gorge Trail is a popular, 4.5-mile loop suitable for all levels. Enjoy stunning river views as you wind through the scenic Icicle Valley. Mid-way through the hike you will come to a bridge crossing over the roaring waters. Take a moment to breathe in the fresh, crisp mountain air, and snap a family picture! Leashed pups are allowed.   Uncork and Unwind Leavenworth boasts nearly two dozen wine tasting rooms, the majority of which are downtown and within walking distance from your cozy vacation rental. Kids of all ages can also enjoy sledding down the hills in and around town.  Hit the World-Famous Leavenworth Museums Greater Leavenworth Museum Leavenworth, Washington is a town that’s rich in history, and the Greater Leavenworth Museum is a must-visit spot for those who want to learn more about the area. This family-friendly museum has exhibits that cover everything from the Wenatchi tribe and agriculture to lumber and local ski history. Visitors can also explore exhibits on Leavenworth’s beloved annual festivals, making it an excellent way to understand the town’s vibrant culture. For those who want a deeper dive into the area’s history, Bavarian Walking Tours offers two guided walking tours that cover everything from the railroad and mill town to the downtown area of Leavenworth. The events will take place in downtown Leavenworth on Sept 30-Oct 1, Oct 7-8, and Oct 14-15, and will differ from years in the past by providing more community and family-friendly focused activities.  What are the changes?  The festival area will be more spread out, with activities and events happening in the Festhalle, Front Street Park, and other downtown areas. Beer from local breweries will be served, alongside plenty of traditional German beers, and a special festival beer on tap at the beer gardens. The image of Lake Wenatchee is iconic – a clear blue, glacier- and snow-fed lake surrounded by the stunning Cascade Mountain Range in the state of Washington. The lake is sunny and warm during the summer with a shallow lagoon – perfect for pint-sized swimmers!  Ready to take a dip this summer? Check out our list of tips for a fun-filled day at the lake:  Is Lake Wenatchee safe to swim in?   Lake Wenatchee has a shallow roped off area designated for swimming on the south side of the state park. At times the wind can pick up causing choppy water, but it is usually calmest close to the shore.   How deep is the lake?  The 5-mile-long lake is 244 feet deep at its greatest depth and is a popular spot for windsurfers and boaters.  Kayaking, Canoeing, Stand Up Paddle-boarding  The calmer shores are a great place to grab a paddle and explore this scenic lake. The south side of the park is the easiest place to launch with parking closest to the water. Looking to rent equipment? Lake Wenatchee Adventures offers kayak and SUP rentals daily from 10-6:30 during the summer. They are located at the south entrance near the swimming beach.   Getting to the lake  Lake Wenatchee State Park is located 16 miles from Leavenworth. From US Highway 2, take a turn at Cole’s Corner north on State Route 207. The official swimming beach is located in the day-use area on the south side of the park. If you prefer to avoid the crowds, you can also access the water on the north side beach, where there is a lovely sandy beach.  Is a pass required?  Lake Wenatchee State Park requires a Discover Pass in spring, summer and fall. The day pass is $10/annual pass $30, and provides you access to millions of acres of state recreation lands in Washington. Remember when you purchase the pass you are helping keep the state’s numerous outdoor recreation sites open and accessible to the public. Leashed pups are welcome to join in on the fun, too!  Stock up for supplies before hitting the lake at Lake Wenatchee Park Store.   This general store trys to remember what you forgot! They sell a wide range of beverages, ice, snacks, ice cream, sand toys, beach towels, and so much more!
