From the parking lot, the 2.5-mile trail along Tumalo Falls Road will wind you through a glaciated valley filled with majestic ponderosa pines. For a less trafficked hike, park at Skyliner Sno-park (0.4 miles back down Skyliner Road) and follow a small trail on the south sides of Tumalo Creek.
Snowmobilers and snowshoers are attracted to this trail for its beautiful waterfalls and clear blue skies. Yes! Snowshoeing is often easier on the joints than hiking, thanks to the softer snow surface. It’s also a great cardio workout that burns more calories due to added resistance.
While you don’t need “snowshoe-specific” boots, waterproof hiking boots or insulated winter boots are ideal. They should be stiff enough to support the bindings and keep your feet dry and warm.
Waterproof, insulated boots with good ankle support are best. Look for boots with a firm sole and secure fit that can handle snow and cold temperatures.
No helmet is required for snowshoeing. Since it’s a low-impact, slow-paced activity, the risk of falling or injury is minimal compared to skiing or snowboarding.
