Why Go Snowshoeing in Sunriver?

Snowshoeing is a peaceful, low-impact way to explore Central Oregon’s scenic winter beauty. As an accessible alternative to skiing or snowboarding, snowshoeing lets you venture deep into snow-covered forests and alpine meadows, with little equipment or training required.

Check out some great places near Sunriver for snowshoeing:

For a less trafficked hike, park at Skyliner Sno-park (0.4 miles back down Skyliner Road) and follow a small trail on the south sides of Tumalo Creek.

Snowmobilers and snowshoers are attracted to this trail for its beautiful waterfalls and clear blue skies. The out and back trail boasts breathtaking views of Paulina Lake, Paulina Creek and Paulina Falls. Please note that access to the falls and trails need to be reached via ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile, as the roads are only maintained as far as Ten Mile Sno-Park.

Wanoga Sno-Park

This dog-friendly sno-park offers miles of groomed and ungroomed trails. Bring a picnic lunch and a thermos of hot apple cider or hot chocolate to enjoy in their large warming hut with a wood stove.

Mt. Bachelor’s Nordic Center

FAQs About Snowshoeing in Sunriver, Oregon

Is snowshoeing easier than hiking?

Yes! Snowshoeing is often easier on the joints than hiking, thanks to the softer snow surface. It’s also a great cardio workout that burns more calories due to added resistance.

Do you need special shoes for snowshoeing?

While you don’t need “snowshoe-specific” boots, waterproof hiking boots or insulated winter boots are ideal. They should be stiff enough to support the bindings and keep your feet dry and warm.

What boots are best for snowshoeing?

Waterproof, insulated boots with good ankle support are best. Look for boots with a firm sole and secure fit that can handle snow and cold temperatures.

Do you need a helmet for snowshoeing?

No helmet is required for snowshoeing. Since it’s a low-impact, slow-paced activity, the risk of falling or injury is minimal compared to skiing or snowboarding.
