Deschutes River Trail This beautiful and accessible trail runs just over 23 miles from Farewell Park to Riverbend Park, through the Old Mill District and ends near McKay Park. Here are some of our favorite alpine lakes for exploring: Todd Lake This pristine lake is nestled at the base of Broken Top, providing visitors with stunning views of wide-open meadows, mountains, and summer wildflowers. A 1.5-mile trail, suitable for all ages, will guide you around the lake. Keep your eyes open for hundreds of baby frogs that hatch here early summer. Note: the trail is only open during the summer months. Paulina Lake Situated at the basin of the Newberry Volcano caldera, Paulina Lake boasts breathtaking views reflecting thousands of years of volcanic activity. The day use area offers picnic areas and swimming beaches. The water comes mostly from snowmelt, so it can be chilly for swimming in the early season. Luckily, the Paulina Lake Loop Trail leads you to some geothermal hot springs on the north shore. Moraine Lake This high mountain lake is easy to access and is not too far from Bend, making it the ideal family outing. The lake is not very deep, so late August/early September, the water is warmer – perfect for taking a dip as you soak up the views! Twin Lakes The 3-mile hike into Twin Lakes will take your breath away with meadows of wildflowers, miles of old growth Douglas Firs, and views of turquoise water. Sparks Lake Just off the Cascade Lakes Highway, Sparks Lake boasts stunning views of Broken Top, South Sister, and Bachelor Butte, a perfect backdrop for your family photo. Elk Lake Elk Lake, with the Three Sisters towering over the north end of the lake and Mt. Bachelor dominating the eastern horizon, has a beautiful backdrop. It is not a high-traffic fishing destination, but it is so clear that you can see all the way to the bottom from any area on the surface. Tumalo State Park: What to Know Before You Go

Where is Tumalo State Park? Nestled in the heart of scenic and sunny central Oregon, Tumalo State Park sits along Oregon’s spectacular Deschutes River four miles north of Bend. Its location makes it an ideal base camp for endless outdoor activities: lush green golf courses, crystal clear streams full of rainbow trout, pristine alpine lakes, and miles of scenic hiking and mountain bike trails. Day-Use Tumalo’s day-use area rests on the banks of the Deschutes River, and features picnic sites shaded by majestic ponderosa pines, junipers and alders. There is also a wading area perfect for taking a dip on a hot day. Day use hours are 7 a.m. – 9 p.m. year-round. A day use parking permit is required, and can be purchased on-site. Deschutes River Trail A 2.4-mile Tumalo segment of the 12-mile Deschutes River Trail can be accessed from the day-use area parking lot. The trail follows the Deschutes River south 1.4 miles to Riley Ranch Nature Reserve, which offers additional trails. Bikes are not allowed on this section of the trail, and dogs are not allowed at Riley Ranch. The trail also continues north along the river for a mile. To access it, cross the river from the OB Riley Road Bridge. This section of the trail offers access to some slow-moving parts of the river perfect for wading. Note: Tumalo Falls is not located near Tumalo State Park. This scenic landmark is about a 45-minute drive southwest of the park. Ready to Explore Tumalo State Park? Paulina Plunge – Take the Plunge This Summer!

Central Oregon is an outdoor enthusiasts’ paradise. Experience an adventure tour that has a little of everything: a six-mile ride down a smooth forest trail on a fat tire mountain bike, nature hikes, waterfall viewing, and of course, the iconic Paulina Plunge. Details of the Tour at Paulina Plunge Descend deep into the Oregon back country, as you discover the grandeur of the Paulina Mountains and the secrets of Chief Paulina’s water slide on your fat tire mountain bike. During the length of the trip, you will descend over 2,000 vertical feet. The tour consists of four 1-1/2-mile downhill biking segments to each waterfall stop. Your group will visit up to six pristine waterfalls ranging in height from 10 to 40 feet, including two safe natural water slides to explore and play on. Two 1/2-mile short, energetic nature hikes are required to reach the falls and slides. Who Can Take the Plunge? This wet and wild family adventure is suitable for all ages from 4 to 70 with intermediate biking skills, and with a minimum 28-inch inseam (stand over bike clearance) to fit their bikes. What Should You Wear T-shirts, shorts/board shorts are recommended. Closed toes shoes are required on your feet at all times of the tour. River sandals and Aqua socks are NOT recommended. Old tennis shoes work best for this type of excursion. What Should You Bring Water – You will need one (32oz) water bottle per rider. No Nalgene wide mouth or metal water bottles, as they will not fit in the bottle rack. Water is for sale at the bike trailer for $2 – cash only. Lunch – Bring your own food in a day pack. Remember you must carry all your own gear, so we recommend travelling light. From Bend, it is about a 25-mile drive to the falls, but the stunning sight of the side by side, 60-ft high falls is enough to make the trip worth it! If you and your kids snowshoe, or want to give it a try, this is also a gorgeous trail to hike in the winter. Bike Around Bend For locals and tourists alike, the preferred transportation in Bend is bikes! You must spend at least a few hours of your vacation pedaling around this biker-friendly mountain town. Tumalo Falls via Tumalo Creek Trail: Hike & Bike Trails in Deschutes National Park

Settled in the Pacific Northwest, Bend (Oregon) is a year-round outdoor playground with the Deschutes river in town. Its epic Cascade Range to the West, tons of hiking trails, and lakes make the city an excellent place for recreational activities. Tumalo fall is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Central Oregon. At nearly 100 feet in Deschutes National Park, Tumalo Falls boasts several stunning viewpoints, accessible hiking trails, other cascading waterfalls, and beautiful forests to wander through. The first glimpse of this picture-perfect waterfall will take your breath away. During summertime, you can simply drive up to Tumalo Falls and then walk to a couple of overlooks. However, in the winter, they close the roads. So, you must park outside and walk 2.5 miles to the Falls. Before heading out for the trip, let’s look at everything you need to know about the trails. Let’s get started! Tumalo Creek Falls: In-and-out & Loop Trails A few miles away from the trailhead in Deschutes National Forest, Tumalo Creek runs from Skyliner snow park to Tumalo Fall. While we’re all for in-and-out hikes, there’s something special about a loop hike. It just feels a little more adventurous. You will return to where you started a different way, never retracing a step, every view of a fresh one. The Tumalo Falls Loop hike is a very rewarding average-length day height that you can do in the high desert of Central Oregon. You’ll travel a total of seven miles and climb about 1300 feet. You’ll have to start at about 5000 feet elevation at the trailhead. So, this can be a good height to escape the valley’s heat for a bit on a hot summer day. How to get to Tumalo Falls Trail To get to the trailhead for this hike, head West out of the Old Town part of Bend on Skyliners Road. After about 9 miles, shortly after the historic Skyliners neighborhood, the road beers right and turns into Tumalo Falls Rd. Then it’s a gravel road for a couple of miles until you dead end at the trailhead. Equipment to Consider Bringing: Let’s go over just a few things you might want to consider bringing for this hike, in addition to whatever you usually gear up with. trekking poleswater shoessun hatNorthwest Forest Pass (for parking). We recommend getting this ahead of time. If you don’t have a chance, bring a $5 bill. Tumalo Creek Falls hiking trails So you made it to the trailhead; now what? Well, you can jump right into the hike, but right at the trailhead, you’ll find an excellent viewpoint for the main Tumalo falls as well as a trail you can take down to Tumalo Creek and follow up to the bottom of Tumalo falls if you want to do a little exploring first. When you’re ready to get going, head off to the left of the interpretive signs up the North Fork Trail. You’ll soon approach a fork in the trail you can take to the right to get that view from the top of the falls. The trail branches off in various places in this area, but it all joins together again if you just keep going forward uphill. This first section of the trail takes you to an upper viewpoint of Tumalo falls, then continues up along Tumalo Creek. The first short section to the upper viewpoint is the steepest part of this trail, but the trail itself is flat gravel. Once you continue past that upper viewpoint, it is a gentle, gradual accent for this section. But the trail becomes more typical_ rugged, rocky, and rudy kind. When’s the best time of the year to hit this trail Tumalo Creek Trail is a great to visit during the spring, summer, and fall. All intersecting trails As you follow this meandering path along Tumalo Creek, you’ll be greeted by a waterfall after a waterfall. The main Tumalo falls at the trailhead may be the biggest, but all of these smaller gems add up to something more. And they keep coming. Swampy Lakes Trail After a couple of miles, you’ll reach a log bridge going over a Creek. You’ll cross the bridge and meander slowly uphill for another mile, passing more waterfalls, which will now be on your left. After that mile, you’ll come to your first junction with the Swampy Lakes Trail, where we’ll be making a sharp left turn, ending section A of this loop. The next section of this loop continues uphill for a bit but soon transitions to a steady downhill, which will continue the rest of the way. After less than half a mile, you will approach that Big Creek crossing we mentioned earlier. The main crossing is a huge log that you can try balancing across, but it may have water flowing around and over it. Bridge Creek Trail If you don’t feel like trying that, you can also go downstream where the water is not pooling behind logs and try wading through it, maybe with some added support from trekking poles. Soon after that crossing, you’ll find yourself gliding downhill on a more overgrown and exposed trail than before, with younger trees crowding the trail. The trail will level out in less than a few miles, and you’ll approach the next section of the loop, starting at a junction with the Bridge Creek Trail. The last section of the loop is a relatively flat trail following along Bridge Creek to connect you back to the North Fork Trail just up from the trailhead. Keep a lookout on your right for lovely views of Bridge Creek and maybe another small waterfall or two in the distance. You’ll come up on a small building on your right towards the end and veer off to the right, returning to where you started. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) Do you need a permit for Tumalo Falls? Favorite Stops along the way to Sunriver Painted Hills, John Day Fossil Beds Ok, to be fair, this is more of an intentional detour than a “stop along the way” but wow, is it worth it! We love to leave the Portland area early in the morning and make it there by late morning, or leave in the afternoon, so we can see those hills awash in early evening golden light. No matter what time of day, this 3000+ acre geologic site will take your breath away! Part mini-Grand Canyon vibes, part other-worldly and ALL stunning it is easy to see why the Painted Hills are one of the Seven Wonders of Oregon. nps.gov Newberry Volcanic National Monument Central Oregon has a fascinating volcanic past and there is no better to place to appreciate all of it than the Newberry Volcanic National Monument. This recreational area is home to stunning vistas, many hiking trails, waterfalls, swimming lakes and natural hot springs. Looking out across the landscape from the 500 ft elevation point at Lava Butte (a 7000-year-old cinder cone) the views of Mt. Bachelor, Broken Top and the Three sisters will have your jaw dropping…almost as much as the sunset views from Paulina Peak (accessible by car). fs.usda.gov Swim and Lunch at Suttle Lake Lodge If you are headed to Sunriver Via Hwy 20, Suttle Lake is right on your way! Located just outside Sisters, OR, Suttle Lake Recreation Area makes for a picturesque stop on your way to Sunriver. This trail follows the Deschutes River for 22 miles and offers a variety of scenery, from forests to meadows. This trail is steep and rocky in parts, but the views of Tumalo Falls are worth it. Here is a map for the Tumalo Trail System Smith Rock Trail Finally, the Smith Rock Trail is perfect for riders who want to explore Central Oregon’s famous rock climbing area. This trail is further away from Bend than the other trails – found in Terrebonne, Oregon, but it’s not too far, considering it’s a world-renowned state park. Trails Owned and Run By Ranches near Bend Let’s not forget the many ranches near Bend that offer trail rides. These rides are usually shorter and provide an opportunity to learn more about ranch life in Central Oregon. Annual Horse Shows near Bend, Oregon If you’re interested in horseback riding and competition, Bend is also home to a number of annual horse shows. Here are a few of the most notable: Oregon High Desert Classics The High Desert Classics is held at the end of July, every year. Over 600 horses and 3000 kids gather at J Bar J Boys Ranch to compete for $150,000 in prizes on six of the last remaining grass footing rings in the United States. Thousands – families, riders, employees, vendors, and spectators – attend the event to enjoy horse and rider athleticism while eating a variety of cuisine and shopping at vendor booths located throughout the show village green. In addition to the rodeo events, local vendors come from all around Oregon (and sometimes further) to offer attendees food, drink, and shopping opportunities. Sisters Rodeo The Sisters Rodeo is held every second weekend in June and is one of the most popular rodeos in Oregon. It features all the classic rodeo events, like bull riding and barrel racing, as well as a number of other activities, like a pancake breakfast, a parade, and live music.
