Top Things to Do in Newport, Oregon

Top Things to Do in Newport, Oregon When You Book a Newport Vacation Rental with Meredith Lodging It is easy to see why so many visitors to the Oregon Coast rave about Newport, Oregon – there is so much to see, eat, and discover! A stay at a Newport vacation rental will have you close to all the activities you will want to experience. Newport is one of the most popular beach towns on the Oregon Coast and a well-established stop for tourists and locals alike. Newport is known for its historic lighthouses, its adventure-focused state parks, a happening arts scene, great restaurants, AND a stunning shoreline. Everyone can find something they love about this charming seaside getaway. Ready to plan your holiday to a Newport vacation rental? We have put together a list of our favorite things to do in Newport, Oregon to make your planning easy! Explore Historic Lighthouses Newport is home to two historic lighthouses and they each offer an amazing history behind how they came to be. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is located on top of a picturesque bluff and was built in 1871. It was decommissioned just a few years later, in 1874, after being deemed obsolete once construction of the new Yaquina Head Lighthouse was complete. Thankfully, the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse was officially restored as a privately maintained aid to navigation in 1996. The Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is believed to be the oldest structure in Newport, Oregon, and the only existing Oregon lighthouse with living quarters attached. Today, the lighthouse is surrounded by beautiful Yaquina Bay State Park where visitors can enjoy walking trails, a scenic overlook that offers great views of Yaquina Bay and the Yaquina Bay Bridge, a fisherman’s memorial and access to explore Cobble Beach below. Up the road a few miles sits the larger. Yaquina Head Lighthouse. At 93 feet, this lighthouse is Oregon’s tallest and is known for its impressive visibility, due to its location and height. It was completed in 1873 and was originally called the Cape Foulweather Light at Yaquina Point. This lighthouse is famous for its Fresnel Lens (the lens celebrates its 150th birthday this year!) The Fresnel Lens was designed and manufactured in Paris before it made its way to Oregon, via Panama. These lenses are thinner and lighter than conventional lenses and can be seen from more than 20 miles out to sea. Visitors can learn more about this lighthouse and its storied past by visiting the adjacent interpretive center, which opened in 1997.   Learn and Play in Amazing State Parks There are more than a dozen state parks and state recreations areas in and around Newport. Two of our favorites are Mike Miller State Park and South Beach State Park. Mike Miller State Park Mike Miller State Park is a beautiful and educational adventure for visitors of all ages. The Park covers more than 45 acres, most of it forested, and features a one-mile nature trail that is dotted with bridges, observation decks, and benches as well as lots of informational signs encouraging visitors to sit and listen for bird calls, observe the coastal flora and fauna, and watch for small woodland animals, too. An additional highlight of this park is that you can see Sitka Spruce, Western Hemlock, Douglas Fir and Coastal Pine trees all in one place.   South Beach State Park South Beach State Park begins in South Newport and stretches along several miles of pristine Oregon Coast land. There are lots of places to walk, bike, and jog especially along the paved Jetty Trail. This area is popular for horseback riding, too, with many people choosing to take a beautiful sunset ride. The Park also offers a 9-hole disc golf course, a playground area, and places to kayak and canoe.   Discover Beautiful Newport, Oregon Beaches There are many places to get your toes in the sand around Newport. We love Cobble Beach, Beverly Beach, and Nye Beach! Cobble Beach Cobble Beach gets its name from the smooth basalt cobbles that make up its shoreline. This beach is also known for being a wonderful place to explore tidepools and birdwatch – and a beautiful place to take photos, with its backdrop of Yaquina Head always in view.   Beverly Beach Beverly Beach is another local favorite. This beach offers lots of room to roam (from Yaquina Head to the headlands of Otter Rock) and scenic coastline vistas everywhere you look. Beverly Beach is also a favorite among those looking to fly a kite.   Nye Beach Nye Beach is another local treasure. It is both a neighborhood with more than 40 shops and cafes (many owners live above their establishments), as well as a lovely beach that stretches from Yaquina Bay to Yaquina Head.   Arts & Entertainment in Newport Nye Beach is an epicenter of The Arts in Newport, a city that is home to a thriving arts community overall. The Newport Performing Arts Center (PAC) The Newport Performing Arts Center (PAC) is the premier venue on the Oregon Coast. Its Silverman Theater seats 400, while its intimate Studio Theater seats 80. The PAC is home to several resident companies who produce music, theater, and dance performances…and is home base for the beloved outdoor symphony performances each summer.   The Newport Visual Arts Center (VAC) The Newport Visual Arts Center (VAC) enjoys beautiful ocean views and is the jewel of visual arts in Newport. Divided into three galleries, several mixed-use areas, and a showcase area, the VAC features rotating visual arts displays from local, regional, and national artists and hosts First Fridays to feature new exhibits the first Friday of every month.   Enjoy Delicious Local Food and Drink It’s no surprise to hear that Newport has an award-winning food scene as well. Each February, the town hosts the wildly popular Newport Seafood and Wine Festival, and year-round it offers visitors many delicious options for food, from casual cafes and breweries to fine dining. Best Whale-Watching on the Oregon Coast – Where to Stay, When to Go and Tours to Book

Best Whale-Watching on the Oregon Coast – Where to Stay, When to Go and Tours to Book

The Oregon Coast is considered one of the best whale-watching places in the world, and Depoe Bay is considered the official whale-watching capital of Oregon.  Winter and Spring are some of the best times to witness the annual whale migration.  The most important things to keep in mind when planning an unforgettable Oregon Coast whale-watching vacation are booking that perfect Meredith Lodging Oregon Coast vacation rental to serve as your home base, timing your trip when the whales are on the move and choosing a great whale watching tour company to see these majestic mammals up close! Timing – What Months are the Best Months for Whale Watching on the Oregon Coast? The great news is, there are many times throughout the year that are optimal for whale-watching – and since the Oregon Coast sits right in the middle of the whale migration superhighway between Alaska and Mexico, you will be well-positioned to see all the action.  From mid-March to about the end of May, you will see gray whales migrating back toward Alaska from Mexico – and many are Mama whales and their calves, who often prefer to stay closer to shore (within 1-3 miles offshore). From May through the end of Summer, resident whales (ones who call the Oregon Coast home for months at a time) stay close to shore for feeding and local whale-watching companies offer daily excursions to see the whales up close (while still protecting the safety of the whales, of course). After Summer, it is often a little harder to spot the whales until they begin their migration back to Mexico, anytime from December to early February.  During this time, the whales tend to be a bit further out, so your best bet for whale watching charter are the spring and summer months described above. How do I book a tour? What tour companies should I use? Seeing whales up close is a powerful experience that you and your family/friends will never forget! If a whale-watching adventure is high-up on your bucket list, we strongly recommend you book a tour with a local charter company out of Depoe Bay. You will never forget watching a 40-ton whale leaping out of the water! Here are some of our favorite charter companies: Whale Research Eco-excursions. For a fun and educational experience, we recommend signing up for a tour with Whale Research Eco-excursions in Depoe Bay, OR. These excursions are led by expert marine biologists on zodiac boats, which are rated #1 in safety and extremely comfortable. You can look forward to seeing giant whales, sea lions, seals, seabirds, and more! One and a half hour excursions cost $45 and are just $35 for children 12 and under. Daily departures are scheduled at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 2 p.m. It’s a good idea to arrive early and don’t forget to bring your camera! Trade wind Charters. Tradewind Charters Whale Watching and Fishing is another one of our favorite tour companies. In business since 1938, this premier charter service provides fun and interactive whale watching adventures. Tours are led by a friendly and knowledgeable staff on modern, fully-equipped vessels. Participants say they many come aboard as a visitor, but they leave feeling like they are a part of the crew. One-hour whale watching cruises are just $20 for adults, while two-hour cruises are $35. Whale’s Tail Charters LLC.   Whales Tail Charters is also a great bet.  They offer everything from whale watching and scenic tours to custom trips. Guests can enjoy riding in a comfortable zodiac boat while an experienced guide takes directly to all the best whale viewing areas. One-hour tours are $30, or you may enjoy a one-and-a-half-hour tour for $40. They can accommodate smaller group sizes between 2 and 6 people. Dockside Charters, Inc.   This company offers a range of ocean adventures, from deep-sea fishing to whale watching excursions. Dockside Charters, Inc., Tours take place on 50-foot Delta charter boats, which include heated cabins, restrooms, indoor seating, and outdoor seating on the deck. Tours are offered every day of the week (assuming weather permits). This charter service can also accommodate large group sizes, so make sure to bring all your family and friends! One-hour trips are just $20 for adults, and one and a half hour trips are $25. The Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center The Depoe Bay Whale Watching Center is a great place to visit (you might spot gray whales!), and is also on the National Register of Historic Places. The facility is located right on the seawall in Depoe Bay and park staff is readily available to answer any questions you may have. Hours of operation vary throughout the year, and The Center is typically closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Plan a Visit to Thor’s Well in Cape Perpetua, Oregon

Plan a Visit to Thor’s Well in Cape Perpetua, Oregon

Thor’s Well is one of Oregon’s most unique and popular attractions. This “well” in the rocks set along the mighty Pacific Ocean is a must-see if you are visiting the scenic Cape Perpetua Area on the Oregon Coast.  Here are a few things to know before planning your visit to this impressive geological wonder:  So, what is it?  Known as the “drainpipe of the Pacific”, Thor’s Well is a large sinkhole off the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The theory is the well was originally a cave. Years of water erosion caused the roof of the cave to collapse, leaving a large, bottomless hole in the rock bed. Today, the hole is said to be about 20 feet deep. At high tide, waves come up from the bottom causing impressive, geyser-like waves to shoot up and out of this natural phenomenon.   How to get there?  Thor’s Well is located right off Highway 101/Oregon Coast Highway just outside of Yachats. From the parking lot, you’ll need to walk down a short path to get up close. Do note that the lot is small, and does fill up quickly at peak viewing times. If the lot is full, you can park at Devils Churn, and take the footpath leading over to Thor’s Well.   Best time to visit?  The best time to visit Thor’s Well is at high tide, or when there’s a storm passing through (but be extra careful!). You can check the tide schedule here.  If you can’t visit at high tide, any time of day will still reward you with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.   Additional Tips for Visiting Thor Well:  Ready to book your Oregon Adventures?  (We’re Open!) Meredith Lodging can help you find your perfect Yachats vacation home! You can browse our Yachats vacation rentals online at MeredithLodging.com, or call our Reservations Team at 877.778.9055. 6 Must-Visit State Parks on the Oregon Coast

6 Must-Visit State Parks on the Oregon Coast

The state parks along the coast are some of the best places to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. There are many different activities to enjoy in each park, from hiking and camping to fishing and picnicking. The Oregon Coast is home to many different species of plants and animals. The coastal forests are full of Douglas fir, redwood, cedar, and hemlock trees. The beaches are home to sea lions, seals, otters, and seabirds. In the ocean, you can find whales, dolphins, and sharks. There are dozens of state parks on the Oregon Coast. Some of the most popular include Ecola State Park, Oswald West State Park, Cape Lookout State Park, and Harris Beach State Park. Each park has its own unique features, so be sure to explore them all! Here’s our top 6! 1. Oswald West State Park Near Seaside, OR – See our Collection of Seaside Vacation Rentals > Stretched over four miles along the Oregon coast, situated between Manzanita and Arch Cape, Oregon, you will find the first of our top 6 state parks on the Oregon coast – Oswald West State Park. It’s about a 2 hour drive from Portland and 10 miles south of Cannon Beach. This wilderness is dense with lush forest, sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and transcendent panoramas of the Pacific Ocean, making it a destination for the likes of beachgoers, surfers, hikers, mountain bikers, naturalists, and families from all over the world. Things to do in Oswald West When it comes to activities, Oswald West is not lacking. Here are just a couple suggestions we have: Hiking Trails in Oswald West State Park The hiking that can be done in and around Oswald West is very noteworthy – especially if that’s what you’re into. When traversing some of these trails, the air will feel still, as if you’ve found a little space outside of time – ancient and new all that once. These are great for the whole family or those that want to enjoy the sights and sounds rather than putting in the trek work. Don’t worry; if you’re into tougher hikes, it has those, too. Here are a couple of our recommended hiking trails. Cape Falcon Trail Necarney Creek and Cedar Crossing Loop Neahkahnie Mountain (from the North) 2. Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area Near Newport, OR – See Our Collection of Newport Vacation Rentals > This state park gets its name by its most fascinating feature: the Devil’s Punchbowl. Once a sea cave, the Devil’s Punchbowl is a rock formation that looks somewhat like a bowl, as the name suggests. The bowl is surrounded by cliffs that are popular with rock climbers, and there are hiking trails that offer stunning views of the area. Devil’s Punchbowl State Natural Area is a great place to explore whether you’re looking to hike, swim, fish, or just enjoy the scenery. The area is also rich in history, and the visitor center offers a great way to learn more about the park and its fascinating features. During storms, the restless ocean pummels a huge punch bowl-shaped rock formation with a deafening crash. The surf churns, foams, and swirls as it combines two violent cocktails. The collapse of the ceiling of two sea caves may have created the punch bowl, which was then molded by wave activity. This is an excellent picnic spot with many tables, grills, and a playground. There is also an amphitheater for interpretive programs. The Visitor Center has displays on the natural and cultural history of the area. The Devil’s Punchbowl is open daily from sunrise to sunset. Parking is $10 per car. Dogs are not allowed on trails or in the Devil’s Punchbowl. The best time to visit the Devil’s Punchbowl is in the late spring or early summer when the weather is warm and the crowds are not too large. However, the park is open year-round, so there is always something to see no matter when you visit. Things to do around Devil’s Punchbowl Sightseeing isn’t the only thing you can do at this state park. Here are some ideas: Hiking Trails in Devil’s Punchbowl Devil’s Punchbowl Loop Trail 3. Cape Perpetua Scenic Area Near Yachats, OR – See Our Collection of Yachats Vacation Rentals > Cape Perpetua Scenic Area is a 2,700-acre coastal habitat reserve in Oregon that was designated for its exceptional natural features. This lush and varied temperate forest may be experienced via a 26-mile network of paths. The Cape Perpetua headland, at 801 feet above the Pacific Ocean, is the highest vantage point accessible by car on the Oregon Coast. From this lofty perch, you can take in views of the Cape Perpetua Marine Reserve and the wild and rocky beach where visitors can watch as the ocean’s waves crash against the shore. Cape Perpetua has been inhabited by humans for at least 6,000 years, and it preserves remnants of its long history. Archaeological sites provide indications of Alsea Native American culture and lifestyle, who referred to the region as Halaqaik. When British explorer James Cook saw the headland in 1778, he gave it its name for Saint Perpetua. Things to do at Cape Perpetua Cape Perpetua has a lot of fun things to do. Here are a few: Hiking Trails around Cape Perpetua Captain Cook Trail and Thor’s Well Saint Perpetua Trail Cook’s Ridge and Gwynn Creek Loop Trail 4. Hug Point State Recreation Site Near Seaside, OR – See Our Collection of Seaside, Oregon Vacation Rentals > Hug Point State Recreation Site is one of the best state parks on the Oregon Coast you can check out when you’re in the neighborhood of Cannon Beach. It offers easy access to the beach, a look into the interesting history of the area and offers loads of scenery to take in. The park is home to a variety of plant and animal life, as well as some interesting geological features. Visitors can enjoy hiking, picnicking, beachcombing, and exploring all that the park has to
Surfing Smuggler Cove in Nehalem, OR!

Surfing Smuggler Cove in Nehalem, OR!

The Oregon Coast is not often thought of as a surfing destination. Most of the year, the coastal shoreline can be rugged, rough, and rainy, but with a sense of adventure and the right gear, you can experience the thrill of catching some waves at a hidden spot located within Oswald West State Park called Smuggler Cove. Surfers of all skill levels gather here year-round to enjoy the waves and stunning scenery.   How to get there.  Located 10 miles south of Cannon Beach, the parking lot is right off HWY 101 with plenty of parking, a bathroom, and a drinking fountain. We recommend not leaving any valuables in your car, and filling up your water bottles before making your way down to the beach. The scenic hike through old growth forest takes you under the freeway, down a well-groomed trail for about half a mile. We guarantee the views alone are worth the visit!  Need to rent some gear?  Cleanline Surf Shop in Cannon Beach or Seaside can get you geared up for an action-packed day on the water. If you don’t surf, but still want to enjoy the water, you can rent a skimboard, bodyboard, paddle board, or kayak.   Prefer to start out with a lesson?  Cleanline Surf Shop has two great local instructors who provide lessons for all ages and skill levels. NW Surf Lessons also has knowledgeable and encouraging instructors that will teach you everything you need to know to catch a wave safely and successfully.   What’s the best time of year to learn to surf?  Surfing the Oregon Coast is a year-round sport, but summer is the best time to learn how to surf, because the northwest winds are blowing and the waves are small.  Already a pro? Conditions are in their prime in the fall with warmer waters, less wind, and consistent surf. Winters are great too, if you can brave the heavy rainfall and cold Pacific Ocean temperatures. Check out daily and weekly surf forecast here.   How cold is the water?   Most of the year water temperatures hover between 45- and 55-degrees Fahrenheit, so we recommend wearing a thick wetsuit, booties, gloves, and a hood. Remember – “There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.” 😊  What to bring.  In addition to sunscreen, a towel, and your surfboard and wetsuit, we recommend bringing a picnic lunch or snacks with you, so you don’t have to hike back to the parking lot when hunger strikes! Also, you won’t find any water fountains on the beach, so pack plenty of water to stay hydrated.   Helpful Tip: There is not a lot of shade on the beach, so if you have kiddos, or plan on spending the day at the beach, we recommend bringing an umbrella.   Hungry post surf?  Cannon Beach has some great restaurants to choose from. We recommend warming up with a hot bowl of clam chowder from the Wayfarer, or an order of fish and chips from Ecola Seafood Restaurant. Make sure to take one last stroll on the beach to capture the sunset with majestic Haystack Rock in the background. Cheers to an unforgettable day on the Oregon Coast!  Surf and stay with us!  Meredith Lodging has an impressive collection of Manzanita vacation rentals and rentals throughout the Oregon Coast. Many of our rentals are beachfront, or have easy beach access. We also offer a wide selection of pet-friendly rentals, too! You can browse our complete Oregon Coast vacation rentals collection online, or call our reservations team at 877-778-9055 to book your stay. We hope to see you out on the water soon!
