Road Trip to Manzanita

Road Trip to Manzanita, Oregon – Where to Stay and Things to See, Eat and Discover Tucked into a gorgeous stretch of beach – and in between two state parks – sits a crown jewel of the Oregon Coast, Manzanita. It is easy to see why Manzanita is one of Oregon’s most-loved beach towns, featuring breathtaking ocean views and a charming main street (Laneda Avenue) that offers many locally-owned and carefully curated restaurants, wine shops, home stores, candy stores, a toy store, a pet store and an art gallery to name a few. Everything always feels “just right” in Manzanita – it even remains less crowded in the Summer than its more trafficked neighboring beach towns to the North. Manzanita also offers visitors a popular public golf course, great surfing nearby, incredible hiking opportunities through old-growth forests, fishing, crabbing, bird watching – there is truly something for everyone! The star of the show is the pristine Oregon Coast shoreline, stretching for 7 scenic miles and facing the captivating Neahkahnie Mountain headland to the North. We have assembled our shortlist of some of our favorite things to see, eat and discover in this treasured beach town so that you can plan your perfect Manzanita stay with Meredith Lodging. Favorite Stops along the way to Manzanita Camp 18 Restaurant A family-favorite since 1986, CAMP 18 Restaurant is a convenient stop when driving to the coast from Portland, as you pass it about the time everyone is getting hungry. No one will be hungry for long as this stop is famous for its more-than-hearty breakfast fare and especially the pancakes, waffles, eggs and bacon and giant cinnamon rolls. After breakfast, you can explore the grounds bit which include many museum-quality exhibits on Oregon Logging (including the building itself) and the popular gift shop. camp18restaurant.com Neah-kah-nie Viewpoint Many Oregon Road Trippers will tell you that the stretch of coastline visible when traveling South on US 101 between Seaside and Manzanita has some of the most jaw-dropping vistas they have ever seen. Why not pull over safely and drink it in for a few minutes? This viewpoint/turnout on Highway 101 has ample room for parking and is well worth the stop. From high above you can see all of Manzanita to the South and Cannon Beach to the North. Let the beauty of the Oregon Coast take your breath away at Neah-kah-nie Viewpoint. Great photo spot, too! tripadvisor.com Hug Point State Park A little further south, just before you arrive at Manzanita, you can make a stop at Hug Point. There is a lot to see at this scenic little beach, from a waterfall to well-preserved horse-and-buggy tracks worn into the rocks from a time before there was a highway. Pioneers traveling around this headland had to hug the point carefully, and that’s how Hug Point was named. PLEASE NOTE: Before venturing out at Hug Point State Park – or any beach in Oregon – it is important to be aware of the tides so you do not get stranded or put yourself in danger. Top Kid-Friendly Activities in Lincoln City

Top Kid-Friendly Activities in Lincoln City

The Oregon Coast is a favorite destination for families, with seemingly endless opportunities for discovery and fun. In Lincoln City, there are so many opportunities to put smiles on the faces of those you love. We recently checked in with some local kiddos we know, and they assured us that this list gets their “Dino-mite” (that will make more sense in a minute) stamp of approval. First, renting a kid-friendly house is a great option. When calling or looking online to book your Lincoln City vacation rental, ask about our properties that go the extra mile to make sure kids have fun, too. From stocking in-house games and puzzles to game rooms complete with ping pong tables, pool tables, video games and even air hockey, or a garage stocked with beach toys and beach chairs, our Reservations Team can help you find a home the whole family will love. Make sure you also consider our Oregon Coast Resort Properties Bella Beach and Olivia Beach…with amenities like bike rentals and playgrounds and even a seasonal pool…there are lots of things to keep your favorite kiddos entertained. Once you have settled into your Lincoln City vacation rental, the top of most kids’ lists is getting to the beach as fast as possible. The Oregon Coast offers year-round opportunities to explore and play. Our favorite way to get the post-road trip wiggles out is to hit the beach in Roads End, Lincoln Beach, or Nelscott Beach. Ample parking and miles of pristine beach and incredible views makes it easy for everyone to enjoy their time at any of these locations. Once you have had your fill of sand and sea, it’s fun to head into Lincoln City and explore the shops and restaurants. Here are some of our favorite stops: Say “Hi” to Your Favorite Dinosaurs at Prehistoric! One of our favorite stops is always Prehistoric, a one-of-a-kind shop that will be a huge hit with every dinosaur, rock, and treasure hunter in your life. When you walk in the door you are greeted by the sounds (and movement) of a to-scale baby T-Rex! It’s so real-looking it can be intimidating for little ones, so make sure they are prepared for this unusual hello. Not to worry if dinosaurs are not their thing, though, there is a lot more fun to be had at Prehistoric. From cracking your own geode in their on-site geode cracking machine, to learning as much as you possibly can about rocks and minerals, to their impressive toy dinosaur collection, kids of all ages will find something to be excited about. They also have a world class collection of fossils from all over the world. Their staff is incredibly well-versed on everything in the store and loves to spend time helping kids learn more about the world around them. Our favorite thing to do is “mine for minerals” in their mineral trough and see what treasures we can discover. Make time for local sweet treats. After all of that fun, the kids we know are ready for an afternoon treat. We head straight to Read’s Candy. Located just up the road from Prehistoric, Read’s is exactly what an Oregon Coast candy shop should be…classic, filled with old school favorites and friendly service, too. Stop by for some seafoam and saltwater taffy. If you are lucky one of their candy-makers might be making candy and you can watch how it all comes together. Pizza and Bowling are a great combo! Next up, we recommend checking out a one-stop-fun-stop for fun the whole family can participate in and dinner in the same place…Olde Line Lanes bowling alley and restaurant. This recently remodeled and super charming space offers several lanes of bowling as well as really great food. A late afternoon stop for bowling and dinner means fun and fabulous food for everyone. And no one has to do the dishes! S’mores at the beach are always a good idea. Once you’ve had your fill of bowling and delicious food, we think it would be fun to head to the community fire pit near your Meredith Lodging Lincoln City vacation rental and toast some marshmallows. Meredith Lodging has installed community firepits in our Belhaven, Olivia Beach and Bella Beach neighborhoods! Or, perhaps, you’ve booked a rental home in our collection with its own private firepit. Book your Meredith Lodging vacation by visiting MeredithLodging.com or calling our locally based and experiences Reservations Team at (877)778-9055. And if you are looking to book a home equipped especially for kiddos, just let them know and they will help you find the perfect place. We hope to see you soon!

September, October and November can be gorgeous months on the Oregon Coast – and an ideal time to visit Meredith Lodging vacation rentals! On the off-chance you find yourself in stormy weather, pack up the kids and check out these kid-approved Lincoln City outings! Read’s Candy It will not be a tough sell to talk the kiddos in to visiting a candy store – rain OR shine! Read’s Homemade Candies is a Lincoln City institution and one of the only places on the coast that still makes their taffy by hand, in-house.  The kids will love watching the candy being made and listening to the whir-of the wrapping machines. Read also has lots of coast classics for the grown-ups too – even Seafoam! Prehistoric Do you know a kid that is obsessed with all things dinosaur? A kid who likes rocks and uncovering treasure? Pretty sure we have just described every kiddo we know.  When the rain hits, head to Prehistoric for hours of education and fun. From the baby T-rex greeting you at the door, to the extensive collection of rare rocks and crystals, to the chance to crack your own geode and mine for precious gems – Prehistoric really is fun for everyone!  Your kids will love spending a few hours in this unforgettable space. Old Line Lanes Bowling is always a good rainy-day idea…and bowling with great food and drink is even better!  Visitors love the remodel the owners of Olde Line Lanes completed a couple years ago and many choose to spend time in this classic space during any kind of weather!  The food is great and grown-ups will appreciate the chance to have an adult beverage with their pizza. Everyone will love the chance to get their bowling game on in this cheerful and inviting location.  Lincoln City Glass Center Take the kiddos for an arts-based outing and visit the Lincoln City Glass Center – where everyone can create their own piece of blown glass, alongside the talented (and patient!) instructors. If you aren’t feeling in the mood to make something, consider just stopping by and watching others as they create their own personal works of art. Sand Dollar Home – A Magical A-frame on the Oregon Coast, Where Pups are Allowed!

Sand Dollar Home – A Magical A-frame on the Oregon Coast, Where Pups are Allowed!

Meredith Lodging’s beloved Sand Dollar Home sits just above beautiful Roads End beach – with only a grassy oceanfront yard) perfect for pups!) between you and the sand. I have long been a fan of A-frames in general…and one ON the beach where we could also bring our pup along for the weekend? SOLD….and booked as soon as we could find an open date.   When we pulled up to Sand Dollar home, I was struck by the cozy size of this oceanfront cabin…and as soon as I walked in the door I was struck by everything else about it – amazing light, luxury finishes and magazine-worthy décor – and that wall of windows! For a cozy cabin, Sand Dollar has one of the biggest views I have ever seen!   We unpacked as the sun came out – and once we realized we were going to have full sun for the rest of the evening, we cancelled our reservations for dinner our in Lincoln City and instead my husband made the quick run to Barnacle Bill’s Seafood Market for some fresh Dungeness crab, salt and pepper prawns and smoked salmon.  Oceanfront seafood picnic for two, please!   While my husband was away getting dinner, I unpacked and settled into the undeniable luxury of Sand Dollar.  This cozy space literally has everything you could ever want for a perfect weekend away… from the aforementioned fine furnishings to a spa-like shower, impressive little kitchen and luxury linens atop the coziest beds.  Most of all the sounds of the ocean outside your door and the views out the window…it’s impossible not to feel like you have arrived someplace truly special.  I felt like I have left the chaos of the workweek behind and stepped into the pages of some perfectly curated “Weekend Away” magazine.   The door opening downstairs let me know dinner had arrived and it was time to set up for sunset.  We took our pup out for a romp on the oceanfront grassy yard and realized maybe the only thing happier than a dog on the beach is a dog with a front yard on the beach!  We moved our perfectly-weathered and very comfortable deck chairs and side tables to the lawn, grabbed a beach blanket form the well-stocked cedar chest and settled in for a sunset seafood feast.   What is it about having the time to watch the sun drop all the way into the sea that makes time seem to actually slow down a bit? As we washed our delicious seafood, cocktail sauce and saltine cracker feast down with some champagne, we had just enough left to raise a glass to the spectacular sunset and our good luck.   Off to bed upstairs on the king-size extra comfortable bed and Belgian linen bedding and the cozy dog bed we brought along with us and the three of us were asleep in no time.   The next morning, I had no expectations of good weather after we were treated to a late season sunset the night before.  I woke up just before sunrise and realized that Roads End beach was starting to be awash in color. The tide had left behind perfect pools of water that were now reflecting pink and gold.  I remembered why people say there is nothing quite like being oceanfront – it’s like the best movie in the world playing out before you all day. We fired up some local favorite Left Coast Coffee in the coffee maker and watched the sunrise show for a bit before we headed out for a beach stroll with the pup and to have a look for the famous “Finders Keepers” glass floats.  Local glass-blowing artists hide glass floats year-round in Lincoln City – and if you are lucky enough to find one, its. yours for the taking.  We struck out on the glass floats, but struck lucky when we headed back home to watch the beach come to life from our cozy Sand Dollar perch…outside it was sunny and cold and inside it was all about getting cozy with a side of ocean waves.   After a lazy morning, we decided we should venture out at least a bit and headed to Blackfish Cafe for lunch (the place we were supposed to go the night before).  We love this charming café, located right along Hwy 101 as you head south through town.  While I have never had a bad meal here, what keeps me coming back is the salmon Caesar salad…the best I have ever had!   Feeling energized we headed to another favorite local stop – Scout Northwest Trading Company. This well curated collection has something for everyone from outdoor gear, to local foods and cute clothing – but today we were here for a very important purchase – our first Yeti cooler.  If you are in the market for anything Yeti, Scout is the place to go – they have one of the best selections of coolers, tumblers and camp cups we have seen!  After a lot of looking we quickly settled on a Yeti Roadie and headed home to Sand Dollar.   We were treated to another spectacular sunset and took that as a sign that we were simply not supposed to leave this magical little cabin for the rest of the weekend – and chose to spend out the rest of the weekend right there.  From frequent strolls with our pup on Roads End Beach to cooking locally-caught fish in the well-equipped kitchen, to toasting the sunset from our deck and raising a cup of coffee to the sunrise…Meredith Lodging’s pet-friendly Sand Dollar home is one of the most magical places we have ever stayed.  We can’t wait to check-in to Sand Dollar again soon!
Meredith Lodging’s Top Things to See, Eat and Experience in Yachats, Oregon

Yachats

Meredith Lodging’s Top Things to See, Eat and Experience in Yachats, Oregon

Yachats (pronounced YA-hots, for those in the know!) calls itself the Gem of the Oregon Coast, and it’s easy to see why. Blessed with a dramatic, rocky coastline and the picturesque estuary of the Yachats River, this small town gives you easy access to surf and sand. The headlands to the north, including the astonishing Cape Perpetua, have more scenic stops per mile than most anywhere on the coast, with churning chasms, spouting horns, sea caves, old-growth trees and basalt cliffs that plunge into the sea. Yachats is an excellent place to station yourself for coastal exploration, but it’s also worth exploring in its own right.  Meredith Lodging Yachats Vacation rentals provide the perfect home-base while exploring all that this extra-special part of the Oregon Coast has to offer.Despite the town’s small size, delicious food and interesting eateries abound. For coffee, treats, breakfast or lunch, you’ll want to head to the Green Salmon, an intriguing coffee house right on Highway 101. There you’ll find sustainable practices and delicious fair-trade coffee and tea, home-made baked goods, soups and sandwiches and lots of locals meeting up. You’ll also want to try Bread and Roses, located down a side street beside the Yachats Commons and near a terrific kids’ playground. It also features locally sourced and fair trade food and drink, including breads made in the Bread and Roses oven.Another spot that prides itself on healthy, local food (and beer brewed on the premises) is Yachats Brewing Company, which serves beers, ciders, wines and a choice local-foods menu for lunch and dinner. They also make fermented foods on site and have a small gardening and cooking bookstore. There’s more eating to be done: try the Drift Inn, a bustling and tasty restaurant popular with locals and visitors alike. You’ll enjoy nightly live music along with a delicious pizza or seafood dinner and access to a full bar. Ona, a seafood restaurant that hugs the Yachats River estuary with ocean views, is an elegant choice. You might also like to try Luna Sea Fish House, a restaurant that features the day’s catch: the owners are a Yachats fishing family. Want something especially family friendly? LeRoy’s Blue Whale has served breakfast, lunch and dinner in Yachats since 1980.Yachats has small shops fun for browsing, including Judith’s Kitchen Tools, Planet Yachats for rocks and gems, Toad Hall for gifts, and many more. You can visit all of those shops and eateries on foot—Yachats is small. It’s worth walking through the town’s streets to see its sweet coastal homes and gardens. Walking the rocky coastline is easy if you catch the 804 Trail, which takes you from the estuary north for 1.7 miles. You’re likely to spot seabirds, seals, herons and gulls and plenty of gorgeous surf crashing on the rocks.A getaway to Yachats is a great idea any time of year.  This gem of a beach town truly offers something for everyone, from breathtaking views at Cape Perpetua, to beautiful beaches perfect for strolling, to a charming town full of restaurants and shops to explore.
